Cutting-Edge Treatment with Medical Grade Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a natural, non-invasive treatment delivering pure medical-grade oxygen at elevated atmospheric pressure (between 2 and 3 ATA). This results in a 10x-15x increase in plasma oxygen concentration, accelerating healing and enhancing overall outcomes. HBOT is FDA-approved for various conditions such as chronic wounds, diabetic foot ulcers, and late effects of radiation, with insurance often covering its costs for approved conditions.
FAQ: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) is a treatment in which you breathe in purified oxygen — 100% pure versus the 21% oxygen you breathe in normally. The treatment takes place in one of our safe pressurized chambers. The higher air pressure allows you to breathe in more oxygen than usual. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy works in several different ways, including:
- Delivering oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-starved tissue
- Blocking some bacterial toxins
- Strengthening your immune system
- Stimulating growth of new blood vessels, skin cells, and collagen
This provides tremendous benefits for people who struggle with chronic wounds and other illnesses. As part of a comprehensive treatment plan, HBOT has helped many patients prevent amputation.
What does hyperbaric oxygen therapy treat?
HBOT has remarkable healing power and thus has many different applications. As wound care and limb preservation experts, our team at Limb Preservation Center of East Tennessee specializes in healing chronic wounds to help patients achieve the quality of life they deserve. We commonly use HBOT to treat severe wounds that don’t respond to other therapies.
Some of the most common reasons to have hyperbaric oxygen therapy are:
- Limb-threatening diabetic wounds
- Radiation burns and injuries affecting soft tissue and bones
- Compromised skin grafts and flaps following surgery
- Crush injury
- Compartment syndrome
- Sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL)
- Acute peripheral ischemia
- Chronic refractory osteomyelitis
- Necrotizing infections
HBOT has several other FDA-approved uses, and we are proud to offer this specialized service for all approved cases.
What is the hyperbaric oxygen therapy experience like?
Before your HBOT session, our team will review specific preparation guidelines. For example, you can’t wear jewelry, glasses, or a hearing aid in the chamber. You’ll receive clean garments to wear and undergo basic health checks to ensure your readiness.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a painless process. Our HBOT chambers are 7ft+ monoplace hard-sided chambers with clear sides, so you can comfortably see outside of the chamber throughout treatment. We treat one patient per chamber.
While you’re in the chamber, you may initially experience a plugged-ear sensation, similar to what you’d experience in an airplane, but it generally goes away quickly. There is an entertainment system in each chamber with movies and TV shows that you can watch, but you can also doze off or simply breathe normally. Sessions typically last 60-90 minutes, but the length of time is based on your personal needs. Our HBOT Technician will be right by your side to ensure a comfortable and effective HBOT experience, and you are able to communicate throughout treatment via a communication system in each chamber.
